2018 COUNTRY PENNANTS MANDURAH SATURDAY 3RD & SUNDAY 4TH MARCH (LONG WEEKEND)   WHAT IS COUNTRY PENNANTS? Country Pennants is an annual event with a long history in Western Australia and earlier this year held its 59th event in Kalgoorlie, WA. It is the largest swimming event on the Country Swimming calendar and is regarded as the Grand Final Team Event in Country Swimming. (Country Championships held in January is more of an individual swimmer’s event) This event is held over the Labour Day long weekend with participation of up to 30 Country Swimming clubs. It’s a great opportunity to showcase a Western Australian country town and can bring in excess of 1500 people to a regional community (swimmers, parents, coaches, officials, volunteers and Swimming WA representatives). It also provides a gentle introduction to relatively friendly competitive team events with opportunities for swimming clubs to represent SWA values of inclusive membership, community engagement and swimmer/athlete performance.   OUR CLUB Esperance Swim Club participated this year for the first time in a number of years. We competed in E Division and with only 8 swimmers finished 3rd overall (out of 8 teams) and 2nd overall in the relay events. The 2018 Country Pennants is being hosted jointly by the Mandurah and Peel Aquatic Swimming clubs and our committee has again support our club participating in this event. Clubs are NOT automatically included in this event but must apply. Clubs are ranked in divisions from A Division to E Division. It is expected that our club would be ranked in E Division again for the 2018 competition show we get a team and be accepted.   WHAT PARENTS AND SWIMMERS NEED TO KNOW As this is a team event it has rules which include . . . Swimmers can ONLY participate in four (4) individual events for the whole event. Clubs can only nominate ONE swimmer per age division per event i.e. only one 9-year-old Esperance Boy can participate in the 50m freestyle. (This is important to know as if our club has 2 interested male/female swimmers in one age only one can be selected in each event). Clubs can name reserves for each event. Swimmers can swim up age divisions. Swimmers will be needed to just participate in relays. (Freestyle & Medley). Swimmers can compete in as many relays as required by the club. Ages of events are 8U, 9U, 10U, 11U, 12U,13U, 14U,15U, 16U & Open in both girls and boys.   WHAT WE NEED FROM OUR MEMBERS So we can move forward we need expressions of interests from Parents and Swimmers. Parents will need to be committed to bring their swimmer/s to the competition possibly for a limited number of events. Pay for accommodation (if needed). Kambalda Long Course Qualifying Meet is being held on 9-10 December at Kambalda West Pool.  Eligible age groups are 8yrs to open.  Information is yet to be sent to Clubs, however there is information on the Swimming WA website.  Entries are done online by parents, and it is advisable that parents speak to Blair or Kim with regard to events prior to registering.  As soon as I receive more information I will pass on to you. The Club stays at the Kambalda Hotel - so if you know you are going, we encourage you to book at your earliest convenience.
